Question 2

Many pre-Socratic philosophers proposed that matter is composed of small, indivisible particles called "atomos" (meaning indivisible). Later, Aristotle rejected the idea of atoms and believed in the four elements (earth, water, air, fire) theory. His objections were philosophical in nature rather than scientific (“how could attributes such as goodness and beauty be mechanical manifestations of material atoms”). He also could not wrap his head around the concept of vacuum.

So scientific inquiry into the nature of the universe in the Western world was pushed back by over two thousand years. Who was the primary pre-Socratic philosopher who proposed the atomic theory and coined the term “atomos”? His name translates to “chosen of the people”.

Question 3

An undefeated team throughout a tournament stumbles in the finals: a story as old as time. It happened with India in the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup. But the starkest version of this happened in the 2007-8 NFL season where a certain team went undefeated 16-0 during the regular season. In the Super Bowl they came up against the New York Giants who had a 10-6 record during the regular season and were a wildcard entry into the NFC post-season. And then this team got “roasted”. Identify the team.

Question 4

The history of technology is full of cases where otherwise superior products have lost out to inferior products because of distribution and monopolistic practices. One such example happened in the 90s when Microsoft dominated with its Internet Explorer browser. So dominant were they that the US government had to step in and a landmark antitrust case followed.

Microsoft falsified some documents including a tape they submitted that incorrectly showed how easy it was to install a third party browser on Windows for America Online users (it wasn’t). Identify this browser which lost the Browser Wars but was sold to AoL for $4.2 billion in 1998.
